U.S. Expands Military Footprint at Jordan Air Base
The buildup was carried out under a bilateral defense agreement signed between Jordan and the United States in Amman in 2021, according to media, which cited several anonymous Jordanian officials. Those officials expressed hope that ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations would produce a deal and avert armed conflict in the region.
Satellite imagery captured on Feb. 20 revealed the full scale of the deployment, with more than 60 fighter jets visible at the base — roughly three times the number typically stationed there, The New York Times (NYT) reported separately. The images also indicated the presence of more advanced aircraft than previously observed at the facility, including F-35 stealth fighter jets, alongside newly installed air defense systems.
Flight-tracking data further showed that at least 68 transport aircraft touched down at the base over the past week, NYT reported.
Situated approximately 100 km northeast of Amman, Muwaffaq Salti ranks among the most strategically significant U.S. military installations in the Middle East.
The surge in forces comes against a backdrop of heightened Washington-Tehran tensions and follows two rounds of indirect nuclear talks this month — the first held in Muscat on Feb. 6 and the second in Geneva on Feb. 17.
